Chinese Paddling

Some countries have over time developed their distinctive means of chastisement or at least become associated with certain tools of application; England with the cane, Scotland with the tawse, France with the martinet, United States with the paddle, South Africa with the Sjambok, and so on. China is no exception. In their case, it is much a style of punishment as a specialist instrument.

The woman to be punished was made to lie face down on the floor, her bottom bared. Then, usually, two men or women, holding long paddles, apply them in turn to her bottom. The paddles are actually more reminiscent of westerm oars and large enough to cover most of her bottom.

Clip one is from the 1995 Hong Kong film Chinese Torture Chamber Story. The star, and the recipient in the clip, is Hong Kong actress Yvonne Yung Hung. The action looks pretty genuine!

Clip two is from another film, but we have not been able to determine its name or origin. Anyone able to read the Chinese writing? How prevalent this technique is nowadays is anyone's guess, but it is interesting just how different countries can be.
