Return

Act 1: Molly takes part in the spanking game, rather amused by it all, while the housekeeper carries on with her knitting.

Act 2: Teddy thinks he is administering a real punishment to Molly for smoking too much, who reluctantly goes along with him.

Your editor writes: "It was something of a surprise to see Billie Whitelaw play Mollie on the stage. With a reputation for playing strong, strident women and known for feminist views, it was actually a bit of a shock to see her across a man's knees, not once but twice in a play on the London stage. Even if that man was T P McKenna, an Irish Shakepearian actor, whose reputation at the time was equal to Billie Whitelaw's. Anyway, I could not resist going back to a matinee and taking the shots above. The spanking received rather more attention than the theatre management expected and seemed embarrassed by it all. It was shuffled off the stage in favour of some mediocre play that did much worse than Molly."

Simon Gray was a very successful playright, so Molly was unexpectedly unsuccessful. There were a few revivals but none ever mada a significant mark on the theatre world.

The still is interesting because in it Teddy is castigating Molly for smoking too much and threatening to spank her.
