Danny and the Deep Blue Sea 1984

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is a
play written by John Patrick Shanley, who won an Oscar for his
screenplay of the Cher-Nicolas Cage hit "Moonstruck" in 1987. The two
could not be more different. Danny is a rather wierd,
avant-garde play where not much happens. The exception is the spanking scene. The guy
(Danny) is spanking the girl (Roberta) because she is carrying a heavy psychological
weight from a dirty little secret from her childhood. Danny thinks he
can spank the guilt out of her! He tells her it would do her some good,
and it seems that it did.
Danny and the Deep Blue Sea
was first seen at a new plays festival in Louisville, Kentucky, in
February 1984; the production quickly transferred to New York. The first
Roberta was June Stein, and her Danny was John Turturro.
For all its oddity, it has been
produced regularly in fringe theatre and there appears not to be any
shortage of ladies to play Roberta. Some of the clips listed below show
some quite hard spankings. As you can see, it’s especially popular in
New York, but productions are far from confined to US shores. For
instance, there was a Norwegian-language version performed in Oslo in
January 2013. The play was translated and produced by Camilla Roman, who
also plays Roberta… so she really has only herself to blame for what
Erik Skøld does to her. |

A
workshop production by Etcetera Productions in London, perhaps made the
spanking a too perfunctory. It ran two weeks October 2009, with Danielle
Dryer as a rather boyish Roberta. She both spanked and directed by
Christopher Johnson. Click HERE to

a statuesque Roberta, with the added complication that he has nowhere to

The German version of Danny is, unsurprisingly, rather
Germanic. Intense, erotic outfits and quite a serious spanking, the
Berlin production does nothing by halves. Click

The
participants here are Raymond Knight and Carly Neigum, at the 2014 Nanaimo
Fringe Festival in British Columbia. This production ups the anti by
using a belt on her shapely bottom. The belt seldom actually lands on
her bottom, mainly striking his hand. This is actually a pity as a few
more on her would have made her reactions more genuine.

2015:
Even when the scene is played as written, it is not unknown for a
reviewer to complain that the spanking was obviously faked. For instance,
it was said of the 2006 New World Arts production in Goshen, Indiana,
that Michelle Milne – another actress who really wanted to play Roberta
– ‘should have chosen to endure a little pain to preserve the atmosphere
of the play’. But that is a naive comment from someone who ought to know
better. Theatre is the art of illusion. If it’s done well, nobody needs
to endure much pain. Drama students also use Shanley’s play to learn how
to do fight choreography – and, yes, in theatrical terms a spanking does
technically count as a ‘fight’.

2016: We end with one of the poorest
Danny spankings. If the director does not take a scene seriously,
why on earth include it. Frankly, the production would have been better
without the spanking, or just a threat.
